So-you decided to create a website. Great! With all of the tools available today for website creation you should be able to publish a great looking site in no time. Right? Well, maybe not. Deciding to create a website and then actually doing it are two very different things and what you need now more than anything is some good advice, some help that will guide you through the whole process.
The first thing you will be confronted with is a constant drumming about SEO. Every website advice article will stress the importance of proper SEO, which is easy to say but much tougher to actually do. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is the process you need to follow to make your website visible to the search engines (think Google). Why is this important? Unless your visitor knows your exact web address, they are probably going to do a search. Let's say your website is about cats. A quick Google search for cats turns up 438 million sites. That's not a misprint, 438 million. Studies have shown that 80% of web searches only look at links on the first two pages, in this case that is 28 links. 28 links out of 438,000,000 pages about cats may be visited by the person doing the search. Obviously it is important for you to get a listing on the first page of the search engine if you want people to find your site. This is where SEO comes in.
By using a well laid out SEO plan you are making your website visible to the search engines. As more quality backlinks are created and more relevant content is published the search engines recognize your site as an authority site and will move you higher in their rankings. It is not a quick process, or an easy one but it is critical to the success of your site. Think of the whole process as placing a bright beacon on your website, making the search engines sit up and pay attention to that bright light that is catching their eye. As you weigh all of the advice available for SEO you will need to be cautious and avoid the done-quickly plans. Every qualified internet expert will tell you that getting a first page ranking with any of the search engines is time consuming and requires a commitment on your part.
